An important collection on how to listen and live with our neighbors. For all interested in the future of Israel.—Joel Neuberg, Santa Rosa Junior Coll. Lib., CA
Shmuel is asthmatic, and there is something claustrophobic about the relationship of these three main characters. This work should appeal especially to readers interested in the founding and early history of the young Jewish state. [See Prepub Alert, 5/23/16.]
Knit into a whole, these stories approach the surreal but don't pass the line; in exquisitely controlled prose, renowned Israeli author Oz (Rhyming Life and Death) reminds us of the creepy unsureness that underlies all "village" life, rural or urban—and not just in Israel. Highly recommended. [See Prepub Alert, 4/18/11.]
