The lengthy setup in this second installment of “The Black Market” series may have readers yawning until Swinson’s trademark violence finally explodes.
Best-selling author Swinson (Dead on Arrival) has produced a decent, fast-paced story. The downward spiral in which the main character is enmeshed is compelling reading, though the characters seem a little flat and the ending is quite abrupt. Swinson's fans or those who like works by Nikki Turner will enjoy this book.
Swinson (Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless) has one of urban fiction's best ears for street trash talk laced with profanity that makes it difficult to quote here. Her story zips right along, but pay close attention as clever plot twists in the last 20 pages are stunners. Swinson's name will easily generate demand. The fourth book is set for release in summer 2016.
When Foxx outlines his complicated plan, this novel adopts a spy movie procedural tone, like, say, Mission Impossible. Still, Naomi is a flawed but admirable heroine and her enemies need to look out when she dons ammo belts and becomes a walking arsenal. Swinson's name will move this title with little effort.
