Readers will laugh and cry at Hattie McDaniel’s successes and share in the frustrations and anger at her treatment. Those who enjoy character-centric historical fiction and Hollywood biopics will savor it.
Best-selling author Billingsley’s (More to Life) first foray into the romantic suspense genre is an absolute thrill ride. The plot builds slowly, but gains momentum the minute the Lovejoys go on the run. While there’s pulse-pounding action, the emphasis remains on the couple’s emotional development. Overall, an exciting entry from an author with legions of fans.
NAACP Award–winning Billingsley returns to the characters of her 2003 debut, My Brother’s Keeper, with this engaging and relatable story of one woman’s midlife realization that it’s never too late to live your best life.
NAACP Image Award winner and best-selling author Billingsley (Let the Church Say Amen) has written another engrossing page-turner about a complicated mother-daughter relationship that readers will enjoy into the wee hours.
With a strong emphasis on family, acceptance, and letting go of the past, this uplifting story of a mother-daughter conflict that comes full circle later in life will please Billingsley's fans. [See Prepub Alert, 2/1/16.]
Billingsley takes some liberties with implausible situations along with some clichéd portraits of cops but no matter, there's plenty of top storytelling to keep pages turning. Her authentic portrayal of the fear an African American mother endures when her son is captured by police makes this a timely novel that belongs in all urban fiction collections.
This plot is a well-traveled path for romance novels, but (without spoilers) Billingsley sets up a riveting and suspenseful drama that brings to mind the nasty deception in Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl as Felise weaves more lies into an intricate web that may end up trapping her. Readers may find themselves so engaged they'll pound a fist on their armrest and shout, "What is she thinking!!!" amazonYou know Billingsley's many fans will want this; it would make a good book club choice too.
Priceless trash talk marks this story about betrayal, greed and stepping on anyone in your way. Best supporting character goes to Mae Frances, who nails all her scenes as a muse for Jasmine. A great choice for folks who spend Sunday mornings in the front pew.
