Listeners will be over the moon with Hugo and Nebula Award winner Willis’s (Crosstalk) latest comedic gem, narrated by a voice actor at the top of her game.
Recommended for readers of humorous SF, especially those who loved the author’s previous lighthearted books, such as Bellwether and To Say Nothing of the Dog.
Hugo Award winner Willis (The Domesday Book) packs a punch with this slim novella, inciting nostalgic memories, dropping publisher names, and taking overzealous weeder librarians to task about reverence for the written word.
There are a few blasts from the past in the previously published selections as characters use "the Net" and make "Xerox" copies, but overall this collection of wryly funny, off-kilter stories offers an excellent alternative to the usual sentimental holiday fare while still reflecting Willis's love of Christmas.
Readers who enjoyed the mix of romantic comedy and social satire in Willis's Bellwether will be interested, as will be fans of light speculative fiction. ["A fun, romantic near-future romp from an sf master": LJ 8/16 starred review of the Del Rey: Ballantine hc.]
These shorts were chosen for winning the Hugo and/or the Nebula Award, making the collection most meaningful for fans who know the honors involved, especially the bonus tracks, Willis's Los Angeles Worldcon Guest of Honor and Grand Master speeches. For those who don't care about genre inside baseball, 2007's The Winds of Marble Arch and Other Stories provides a more comprehensive overview of Willis's illustrious career.
