Edgar Award winner Woods has written another satisfying addition to his popular series. Longtime fans will appreciate the inclusion of many familiar characters, including Will Lee and Dino Bachetti. The ending will both shock and amuse readers, and this alone makes Woods's thriller worth the read. [See Prepub Alert, 1/10/14.]
Except for a climactic shoot-out, there is little here to enthrall any but the most devoted Barrington fan. [The Putnam hc was a New York Times best seller.—Ed.]
This dialog-driven mystery adds nothing new to the Stone Barrington series (after Unnatural Acts). Avid fans will enjoy the character's trademark casual, cool demeanor, but some may grow tired of seeing him in the same old predicaments. Some backstory is explained, but new readers may be frustrated because the assumption is made that they are already familiar with the character's past. [See Prepub Alert, 10/28/12.]
There are some truly stomach-turning scenes, and even a hardened reader of thrillers will blanch. Burdett, as usual, can't resist his tendency to lecture farangs (Thai slang for Westerners) on materialism and the myriad weaknesses of the Western mind. While these lectures are getting tiresome, Sonchai and his gritty adventures as philosopher-cop will have fans looking for the next installment.
