Grow Your Own Leaders: Nurturing Leadership and Management Skills for Staff at Every Level

Every library is different in how they serve their unique communities and tailor authentic services to meet patrons’ needs. Developing and maintaining dynamic resources and services in a world where trends are changing at a break-neck pace requires leaders who understand that one-size fits all formulas don’t cut it. How do we find these leaders? Better yet, how do we cultivate them?

Facilitated by the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Library Science faculty, this session will discuss mentorship, networking and ethics through the lens of library industry best practices as well as other industries’ best practices. Yes, theory plays a part in this, but this theory will be supported with tangible ways that participants can immediately begin cultivating leadership. As an important case study, this will include a peek at UNO Library Science philosophies and how the curriculum weaves these concepts throughout every course.

Leadership shouldn’t be limited to a few. Our work calls for leaders at every level, with all kinds of distinctive personalities and skills. This is the heart of 21st century librarianship.
