Welcome to LJ’s 2019 Movers & Shakers 

The 54 individuals honored here—in 50 profiles—are powerful. That word might not jump to mind when many people think about librarians, but it is apt. It captures not only the 2019 Movers’ distinctive contributions to the field and their impact but also the power they foster in the people they serve. They give patrons the intellectual, emotional, and technological tools to become their best selves. They provide solutions to move the needle on critical issues such as literacy and health, race, social justice, and gender bias. 

They do this and more with powerful professional and personal commitment. They help kids become readers and give them agency to lead on inclusivity, diversity, and international understanding, work with the unhoused and those with criminal records while upholding their dignity, and change the way their libraries interact with students and faculty and the way students and faculty innovate and collaborate. 

This is the first year LJ has named a Mover posthumously. Amber Clark, from Sacramento Public Library, CA, was killed on December 11, 2018, as the judges were completing final deliberations for this honor. Clark’s approach to inclusivity and accessibility for those with disabilities began with conversations—she listened to, heard, and implemented what people from the disability community wanted. The replicable model she inaugurated for equitable services across all branches will continue to be built. 

The 2019 edition brings the entire cohort of Movers & Shakers, begun in 2002, to over 900 people. This year’s Movers are the most international group yet, with representatives from Australia, Denmark, Egypt, Fiji, Scotland, and, of course, Canada.
