Fans of the series will enjoy Andy Carpenter’s latest outing, which includes a complex but fast-moving mystery, plenty of offbeat characters on both sides of the law, and several dogs. As in the earlier books, Rosenfelt doesn’t weigh them down with too much backstory, so newcomers can dive right in.
An excellent choice for readers who love cozy mysteries, cats, and/or Halloween. This book would be a worthwhile addition to cozy mystery sections, either to complete the series or as a stand-alone.

While some of the interpersonal dramas fall a little flat, the unraveling of Silvertjärn’s secrets (and the fate of the town’s lost villagers) make for a mostly gripping ride that will satisfy mystery and horror fans alike.
The strengths of this latest procedural from the inimitable Penny will attract her longtime fans and also draw in new admirers. A deft touch with plotting, sensitive characterization, and the author’s warmth and humanity make this a must-have mystery, especially for collections owning the rest of series.
