This long tome of revisionist history looks at the making of the United States from the time of Andrew Jackson to William Howard Taft. Eighty years is a long time, some three generations, and the author views this as when the American Nation became a nation. Hahn's view is pretty much "everything you know is wrong," and he goes into extensive detail to prove his thesis. This may make for an interesting read but not for such a great listening experience. Barry Press is an experienced and gifted narrative artist—his voice is clear and his enunciation is very good. His rhythm in reading is such that it can be sometimes monotonous, which may be owing to the author's writing style. Press does affect different voices for quotes, but on at least one occasion moves into melodrama.
