Dr. Julia Lewis and Inspector Richard Tennant team up once again to solve a puzzling murder in Victorian England in Mcdonough’s follow-up to
Murder by Lamplight. The novel opens with a troubling encounter, setting the stage for the rest of the story. The plot moves quickly from the opening, with events occurring in rapid succession. Women painters are being threatened and the women who sit for them are disappearing. While some can ignore these events, Inspector Tennant believes there is more to the story. When a young woman turns up dead and a man is murdered, the investigation quickly ramps up. The characters are well-rounded and develop throughout the story. Some women characters defy expectations by taking on roles traditionally filled by men and playing an important part in solving the mystery.
