In the late 1980s, thousands of children in Romania, many of them orphans, were infected with the HIV virus, victims of unhygienic medical practices and government indifference. This short documentary interviews some of the lucky few who survived the disease long enough to benefit from the discovery of effective antiretroviral therapies. Now young adults, they struggle for acceptance in a society that maintains an irrational fear of AIDS and of contact with those who are HIV positive. Many hide their HIV status and remain anonymous. The film focuses on three in particular who live in a group home run by Rodica Matusa, a heroic retired doctor who fought on the front lines of the pediatric AIDS epidemic and battled to keep hundreds of infants alive under the horrible conditions of the Ceausescu regime.
VERDICT A sobering but inspiring account of a senseless tragedy, this testament to the power of love and acceptance is recommended for classroom use and school and academic libraries.
