This much-anticipated spinoff to Burke’s “Not Dead Yet” trilogy finds vampire Evan Fournier taking charge of Caballero Investigations while the firm’s owners are in London. The only stipulation he’s given is that under no circumstance is he to take on a paranormal investigation—which of course he quickly does. Paranormals are losing their magic. Even worse, they’re dying. Evan can’t not intervene. Colin Zhan doesn’t know why he tried to kill Evan. The last thing Colin remembers is going into a fire in 1990; 30 years have passed, and despite having suppressed his attraction to men, he is nonetheless drawn to Evan. Evan, who is still suffering from depression, has to figure out how to handle the unintentional soul-bond that he’s formed with Colin, all while trying to solve the mystery of what’s happening to paranormals. Burke provides twists and turns as well as a slow-burn romance that will leave readers wanting more.
VERDICT A sure bet for Burke’s fans that would also be a good fit for readers who enjoy Annabeth Albert’s “Hotshots” series.
