The peace between Earth and Mars has been tenuous, and handing over control of the Mars Orbital Station from NeoG to Mars civilian control is another step to solidify the accords. When Commander Maxine Carmichael and Lieutenant Commander Saqib Vahid arrive to represent NeoG and help with the transition, they are caught by Mars extremists in a violent takeover of the station. On Mars, Sylvia Moroz knows that she places her life on the line as leader of Free Mars, but when an assassination attempt is blamed on NeoG, she’ll have to work with them and Commander D’Arcy Montaglione to discover the truth behind the ground attacks. The road to peace is lined with secrets and deception, and if Max, D’Arcy, and the rest of the NeoG cannot find out who the attackers are, they will be faced with all-out war on the planet.
VERDICT Wagers’s (The Ghosts of Trappist) stellar fourth outing for their futuristic Near-Earth Orbital Guard is filled with snappy dialogue and vivid worldbuilding. With the found family of Zuma’s Ghost as the foundation of the series, the internal conflicts are just as compelling as the external high-stakes action.
