UK-based crochet designer Morgan (
Block by Block Crochet) showcases 40 adorable yet atypical animal granny squares in this new collection. The book covers the whole animal kingdom, including animals that live on farms (pigs and sheep), in the sea (seahorses and jellyfish), in the forest (bears and squirrels), and much more. Organized into two parts—square patterns and projects—this title shows crafters how to mix and match different squares together to create blankets and other projects. Each pattern notes the skill level, materials needed, and stitches used. Readers are also given a written and a chart pattern, plus tips to take their squares to the next level. Instructions are clear and easy to follow, although U.S. crocheters need to be aware that the book is written using UK crochet terminology. But there’s a conversion list in the back of the book for crafters who need it. While some of the animals stem from the granny-square centers, some of them are appliqués that crocheters can sew onto a background block.
VERDICT Each project produces adorable results. A great addition for all crochet collections.
