The 1915 Armenian genocide at the hands of marauding Turks has often been called "the forgotten holocaust." That's partly because this slaughter of 1.5 million people was overshadowed by later and larger mass killings. But it's also attributable to official Turkish denials and the failure of some nations, including the United States, to condemn the slaughter publicly. This film seeks to set the record straight, calling out events for what they were—and what they have periodically continued to be even a century later. It documents the carnage of this tragedy and subsequent outbreaks, exploring how this horror became a template for nearly all of the mass murders that followed in such places as Germany, Cambodia, Rwanda, and Darfur, among others. Sensitive viewers should be aware of some highly graphic content.
VERDICT An unflinching look at a terrible, often-overlooked tragedy deserving of recognition for its appalling impact and unfortunate legacy.
