Ascension of Larks

Linden's first novel introduces readers to Maggie, an independent, globe-trotting photographer, whose best friend Lena is married to Marco, the only man Maggie ever loved. When Marco dies in an accident, Maggie immediately goes to the aid of her friend, but then Lena has an accident, and Maggie must figure out how to take care of Lena's three children. At the same time, Maggie learns she has gained entry into a prestigious photography contest that would take her career to another level. Knowing that she can't leave the children, Maggie assumes her chance is gone. When she meets Daniel and discovers his dark secrets, they form an unlikely friendship. A well-developed cast of characters and thought-provoking choices create a story that will linger with readers. Narrator Lauren Woodward does a fine job, although more differentiation among characters would be appreciated.
