Audrey Hepburn has remained a cultural and fashion icon, although she passed away 22 years ago. Known for her gamine looks and simple elegance, Hepburn was an Oscar-winning actress. William Holden, too, was an Oscar winner; famous for his all-American manly looks, he is probably not as well known today. Though Holden was married, the two embarked on a love affair when they were filming Billy Wilder's 1954 film
Sabrina. Their affair did not last when Hepburn learned Holden could not have more children, so this book's title is a bit misleading. It implies that theirs was a lifelong love affair, which isn't really the case. Yes, they had affection for each other, but they never really came together again. The book details the love affair in a couple of chapters and the rest of the volume is more about their separate lives and careers. Epstein has written accounts of Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, and others and here presents an engrossing look at Hollywood in the 1950s and 1960s.
VERDICT Celebrity watchers who have read biographies of Hepburn and Holden might not find much new here but movie mavens will still enjoy this well-written dual biography.
