The city of Detroit is an amazing character and a critical part of Jones's debut thriller. August Snow is the epitome of cool, a former decorated marine who is self-confident, resourceful, and morally strong enough to do the right thing in pursuit of the truth despite opposition from the rich and powerful members of the government, high society, and the criminal underworld. When banker Eleanore Paget dies, apparently by her own hand, the day after she asks Snow to look into suspicious activity at her bank, Snow reluctantly investigates, despite his no longer being with the Detroit Police Department. In fact, he recently won a wrongful termination suit against the department, and he's persona non grata among his former friends. The narration of Mirron Willis is splendid. His calm voice and ability to convey ever so subtly emotion and mood make this a story you want to hear. His accents are exactly right, too.
VERDICT Highly recommended. Listeners will look forward to future novels in this series.
