Addey Treadwell is recently divorced from Brian, her controlling, demeaning husband, and she is taking a solo trip to a horror convention. She meets a truck driver while stopped at a diner and he offers to caravan with her while she’s driving through the remote mountains of West Virginia, since snow is on the way. Then a horrifying, red-eyed bat creature appears, the truck goes off the road, rolling out of sight, and Addey, who has no cell service, has to figure out what to do next. Should she climb down to check on the driver or drive away? And where—and what—is the creature? This fast-paced novella by Hightower (Crossroads; Whispers in the Dark) is a kind of vision-quest tale. Addey still hears her husband’s voice in her head, criticizing everything she does, and readers will be hard pressed to determine whether the real horror is the terrifying creature or Brian’s lingering effects on Addey.
