Life is a fragile thing. One choice, one misstep, one misplaced moment, and the whole thing comes tumbling down. This is the world of Fracassi’s (Behold the Void) short story collection, a wonderful exploration of our proximity to the end of things and how our lives are precariously balanced on the edge of a terrifying unknown. The collection is rich, with some particular standout tales. In “Harvest,” the terrific opener, a rural wedding is disrupted by a freak act of nature, which unleashes the supernatural power in one man’s unbending devotion. In “Ateuchus,” a geologist’s curiosity over an unearthed meteorite ushers in a force that will begin a new world. And “Death, My Old Friend,” the collection’s lovely closer, is a literal walk to the grave with Death.
VERDICT This one’s an essential read for horror fans, but readers of all stripes will find grace, humor, and some thoughtful reflections on life and death here. The rich, character-driven stories shine with elegantly crafted prose. This collection is one not to miss.
