Recently released from prison for murdering a prostitute, Franz Biberkopf (Günter Lamprecht) tries hard to go straight by taking a series a menial jobs in Depression-era Germany. But his own inscrutable naïveté allows him to be led back to a life of crime in this epic 14-episode TV miniseries adapted from Alfred Döblin's novel by prolific wunderkind Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945–82). Protracted, depressing, and arduous but ultimately rewarding for its lofty ambition and execution, Berlin benefits from a high-def remastering plus making-of docs and other supplements.
