Over the decades, millions of American cooks have turned to Betty Crocker for advice (at one point, “Betty” received as many as 5,000 letters a day, as well as a few marriage proposals) and easy-to-prepare, tasty recipes their families would love. Now the Betty Crocker archives staff have gathered together 100 favorite vintage recipes to share with a new generation of cooks. Some of the recipes were frequent requests (identified by a “Found Lost” icon), some originated from recipes on the boxes of Betty Crocker products, while still others are favorite lost recipes that the Betty Crocker kitchens have now recreated. The recipes themselves range from pineapple cheese ball (a party staple in the 1950s,’60s, and ’70s) and “crazy crust” pizza to more cosmopolitan dishes such as BC’s Everyday Cassoulet and a Shaker sugar pie, which includes a fancy touch of rose water and optional decorative sugared rose petals. Culinary snobs may turn up their noses at the use of readymade pie filling and Bisquick, but other cooks will appreciate the delicious range of easy to complete, quick-to-the-table options this cookbook offers.
VERDICT A welcome dose of culinary nostalgia for some cooks, as well as a terrific opportunity for others to discover just what Betty can do for them in the kitchen.
