In her newest book of knitting patterns, accessory designer Lucas (
Pocket Guide to Crochet) collects 35 of her previously published patterns in one volume. The extensive range of rectangular, triangular, crescent, and circular shawl and scarf patterns will appeal to a wide variety of knitters of all skill levels. Most patterns are labeled for intermediate knitters, but some are more suitable for beginners or more experienced crafters as well. Beautiful full-color photographs illustrate the patterns, presented with both written and charted directions. The “Make It Your Own!” and “Make It Bigger!” sections offer guides for modifying some patterns, which mostly call for sock yarn. Some, however, entail DK or worsted weight, all of which give knitters additional options beyond the standard lace shawl. But since the patterns are all republished from older books, some of the suggested yarns are discontinued or quite hard to source. No alternatives or suggestions for possible substitutions are provided.
VERDICT This book’s shawls are beautiful, and the patterns are easy to follow. The lack of new content and suitable yarn substitution suggestions, however, might present a challenge for some knitters.
