The Hollander Winery and Estate on Long Island’s North Fork has been Vivian and Leonard’s life work. On the surface everything looks great, so when Leonard announces that they will be selling the winery, Vivian is convinced that her poor past decisions are partly to blame. Their son Asher and his opportunistic girlfriend Bridget take the news in stride, but their daughter Leah, who had been shut out because Leonard was against women being involved in the business, leaves her career in Manhattan to try to rescue the winery. This causes a rift between Leah and her husband Steven, while their daughter Sadie is dealing with slipping grades, a lost college internship, and a nonexistent social life. Sadie escapes to the winery too and discovers her grandmother’s book club journal. Soon, three generations of the family are secretly reading Jackie Collins and Judith Krantz; the blushing, sexy stories of strong women overcoming adversity are exactly what the Hollander women need to take back what’s theirs.
VERDICT Pop the cork on your favorite rosé and spend time in the world of wine and cheese. After devouring the latest from Brenner (The Wedding Sisters), readers and book clubs may want to revisit scandalous 1980s books like Lace and Scruples that gave new meaning to the words “girl power.”
