Bobbi Jene Smith (b. 1983) is an American-born dancer who was a prominent artist for ten years in Tel Aviv's Batsheva Dance Company. A former lover of the company's founder and mentor Ohad Naharin, she is shown here undergoing some kind of life crisis and wanting to return to America with her ten years' junior current love Or Schraiber; he doesn't want to leave Israel. She envisions forming her own company and choreographing in America but seems to overvalue her importance in that world as she appears to be little known in American dance circles. She also has issues with her conservative Christian family at home. Filmmaker Lind doesn't seem to know how to focus the story, as the film isn't very insightful about either dance or Smith's life. Viewers will easily tire of Smith's constant angst while learning little about her art. Surprisingly, the video won best documentary notice at New York's Tribeca Film Festival. Bonus features include an interview with Lind and Smith and two performance clips.
VERDICT Much of Smith's dancing involves her being fully nude, writhing on the ground. Of interest only to comprehensive dance collections.
