One of the world's most well-known running events, the Boston Marathon began in 1897. On the third Monday in April, the annual 26.2-mile race, with humble local origins and an initial starting field of 15, now draws more than 36,000 entrants and nearly 500,000 spectators. From early male competitors to the admission of women and wheelchair participants to imposters to prize money and sponsorship, the race has never been without drama. Most recently, of course, the 2013 finish line bombing that killed three and injured hundreds, as well as the 2014 Boston Strong comeback race, provides defining moments. In this slickly produced and informative documentary, narrated by Massachusetts native Matt Damon, past and present history are skillfully interwoven alongside archival materials and interviews with runners, coaches, race officials, and locals.
VERDICT An inspiring tribute to the Boston Marathon story, its athletes, organizers, supporters, and fans.
