Mimi is a well-off young mother, overwhelmed by the stresses of postpartum depression and trying to be a perfect wife. Gabriella works in the Detmer chicken-processing plant run by Mimi’s husband, putting in endless unpaid overtime hours in inhumane conditions, which takes an unimaginable toll on her body. Though these young women seemingly have little in common, they are unexpectedly thrust together when Gabriella’s boyfriend, Edwin, decides to fast-track their financial plans by kidnapping Mimi’s infant son for ransom. His desperate actions set off a suspenseful and deadly chain of events. Cranor (Ozark Dogs) presents a gripping Southern noir about race, power, and revenge. Narrator Victoria Villarreal gives an engaging performance of the complexities of the vividly drawn characters. Her expressive presentation of the tense, twisting narrative is an engrossing listening experience that is fast-paced and frightening.
