In this series opener, Olivia Middleton abandons her Park Avenue home and college to head to a small coastal town in Maine for a job. Everyone assumes she is being kindhearted in going off to care for someone, but it is more than that: she is seeking penance. Olivia's client is not the elderly man she expected but instead 24-year-old Paul Langdon, a wounded veteran. Paul has no intention of allowing this new caretaker in until his father issues an ultimatum that he tolerate her for three months or lose his inheritance. What Paul doesn't count on is that Olivia is his age, beautiful, and able to slip past his defenses.
VERDICT This fast-paced, plot-driven novel from Layne (Isn't She Lovely) meets the definition of new adult fiction. There is a lot going on among characters at the beginning, leaving readers to wonder if there is a story here. After a couple of chapters, though, it all starts to come together as Olivia and Paul must decide whether they will help each other out. Ultimately, a solid tale and a quick read, with plenty of steamy romance and sex.
