Stein (
I Know You Rider) depicts the jubilant highs and grimy lows of life in a touring rock band in this richly detailed fictional travelogue about Major Threat, a Brooklyn-based band on a monthlong tour across the United States. On drums there’s the ever-reliable Ed; on bass, the unbelievably easy-going Paul; fashion-forward guitarist Lilith is determined not to let the recent dissolution of her long-term relationship prevent her from having a good time; lead singer Marcus is the youngest and least experienced member of the group and anxious to learn all there is to know about life on the road. Like, is it ever appropriate to blow off helping load or unload equipment? What is the ideal meal to enjoy before a performance? How do you maintain your cool while suffering the indignity of watching your opening act achieve stardom far in excess of your own? Stein’s amazingly expressive illustration utilizes simple, fluid lines to create human figures capable of conveying nuanced emotion.
VERDICT An immersive odyssey featuring a cast of truly lovable characters.
