The Mortiz sisters have already experienced Los Lagos, basically Hell, but that experience pales in comparison to the day Lula's boyfriend Maks breaks up with her. That is the same day Lula and her bruja sisters perform a canto to try to save Maks's life, but instead he dies and comes back hungry for human hearts. Lula also manages to exile Lady de la Muerte, death herself. Maks is not the only one Lula's canto affects and now she and her sisters must use their magic to try to stop more than 20
casimuertos, or zombie teens, from devouring all of New York while also bringing back Death. Maria Liatis's lyrical voice brings to life Córdova's rich fantasy world full of cantos and Latinx witches. Liatis gives voice to Lula's headstrong nature, and her words flow with emotion and the magic of the story line. Córdova has created likable siblings who have strong family support and a rich heritage while also creating a well-developed fantasy world hidden right in plain sight in Brooklyn.
VERDICT Fans of stories with magical New York will be drawn to the series as well as those who enjoyed the first installment, Labyrinth Lost.
