Developed by a faction of S.H.I.E.L.D., doomsday weapon Gungnir threatens to destroy a nation. Insidious rogue Dr. Mindbubble controls victims via hypnosis and plays a central role in the machinations. Jet Black (daughter of scientist Arnim Zola), the Red Skull, and Nick Fury also feature in the action. The Weapon Minus Program, responsible for creating giant robot Gungnir, hides the weapon's existence from Cap and others—much to their chagrin. Defeating Mindbubble, Cap confronts Iron Nail—a green monster who drains Cap of superstrength, agility, and youth. Cap's powers, granted to alter ego Steve Rogers for decades by the supersoldier serum, are sacrificed in battle as he ends up a shriveled 90-year-old rescued by Falcon. In future issues, Rogers will pass the Captain America mantle to teammate Falcon—lending diversity to the group that has worn the shield in the past during Rogers's absences.
VERDICT Chock-full of action scenes, vivid colors, melodrama, and bluster, the story hits some peaks and valleys. Remender (Fear Agent; Black Science) is a proven storyteller, but parts of this tale seem more stilted than others. Artwork by Klein and Alixe is nicely rendered with clean lines, expressive figures, tons of conflict, and the usual superhero fare. Recommended for libraries catering to superhero fans.
