The crime-fighting pilot Captain Midnight began his adventures in a radio serial in 1938 and eventually migrated to comic books and television. Zane's book about the 1945–49 radio programs summarizes 800 episodes of the character's thrice-weekly adventures, while his MP3 covers only 16 episodes, with five appendixes offering interesting background. Captain Midnight fights villains not only in the United States but in South America and Africa as well, often employing nascent technology that would become more common in the following decades. Zane gives his summaries a pleasant but somewhat dry reading, and they are best sampled one at a time. A few of the original programs can be found online (ow.ly/oytKG).
VERDICT Recommended for anyone interested in the history of popular culture, especially those who still have their Captain Midnight decoder pins.
