FitzSimmons (Constance) returns to a not-too-distant future when human cloning has become a reality, at least for the wealthy. Chance Harker is one of the fortunate few. He and his brother Marley were kidnapped and held for ransom five years ago. Both brothers were killed during the ransom delivery but were brought back to life by cloning. In the aftermath, Chance finds a way forward by becoming a death-seeking stuntman on social media; he’s unconcerned by dying, as he can always be resurrected as a new clone. Things get complicated when Chance is accused of murdering a man from his past life whom he doesn’t remember, which sets off an anti-cloning firestorm in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, new details surrounding the kidnapping emerge, sending Chance on a desperate and dangerous search for the truth. Fitzsimmons’s thought-provoking novel delves into the possible conflicts and ethical considerations arising from human cloning, for society and for individuals who have been cloned.
