Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition resulting from a defect in chromosome 21. Affected individuals generally have developmental and intellectual delays, low muscle tone, and poor memory. Dentist Teresa Cody, the mother of a DS child, strove for years to help her son, Neal. This DVD, written and directed by Hicks, traces Cody's determination to find an answer, despite the opinions of doctors and scientists that such was impossible. Her discovery, after nine years of research, leads to a five-part "cocktail," a treatment that leads to an IQ increase of eight percent to 20 percent after six months in a clinical trial. Craig Garner, of the Stanford Down Syndrome Research Center, is interviewed, as are three of the individuals followed in the trial. The results are remarkable.
VERDICT Winner of various awards, this inspiring and ultimately encouraging film gives parents of DS individuals what they need most—hope. Strongly recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of those with DS, as well as those studying in the education, medical, and social service fields.
