Experimental brain surgery makes a genius out of a mentally challenged man who cannot outwit a mouse, but his emotional development does not keep up in Ralph Nelson's big-screen adaptation of the classic Daniel Keyes short story-cum-novel Flowers for Algernon. Cliff Robertson secured an Oscar for his portrayal of the titular character who tragically reverts back to his former self despite finding love with his devoted teacher (Claire Bloom). The gratuitous use of split-screen effects date the 51-year-old film even as its message of hope and loss endures.
