The second entry in Rodale's Cavendish series (after
Lady Bridget's Diary) is a delightful Regency romp featuring a reluctant American miss whose brother has unexpectedly become a duke. Amelia is incredibly stubborn and a bit of a handful. She longs to see London and do exciting things instead of constantly attending boring dances. Alistair Finlay-Jones is heir to a repulsive baron who wants him to marry one of the Cavendish girls to pay off the baron's debts. Having been administered laudanum to calm her down, Amelia escapes the family house before the draft fully takes effect. She stumbles into Alistair and passes out in his arms. But once she recovers, the pair enjoy a 24-hour period of adventure and romance. Can she overcome her belief that he only wants her for her money? Can he get past his guilt over his part in the death of the baron's son? This sophisticated and humorous tale will keep readers rooting for the genuinely likable characters.
VERDICT Rodale's tongue-in-cheek homages to Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones's Diary add to the fun in this enjoyable romance about two people who are meant for each other and have a great time getting to their happy ending.
