In this documentary short, director Tung follows Pauline Park, a middle-aged woman who began life as an infant boy adopted from Korea by a Midwestern white couple. Like so many adoptees, Park goes in search of her birth family, a journey that takes her to South Korea. Park, who is a transgender activist, speaks at a Seoul pride festival and shares her experiences with local LGBTQ individuals. She is an engaging presence whose life reminds us that the journey to a hoped-for goal can yield its own rewards as Park is unable to unearth new information about her birth family. Tung's gentle, observant pace keeps the shortened format from seeming rushed or lacking in depth.
VERDICT Recommended for larger libraries, particularly those serving Asian and LGBTQ populations.
