Sergeant Jax Stone is reluctantly back in his hometown for his best friend’s wedding when a suspicious fire in the town’s only hotel prevents him from reporting back to duty until the investigation of the incident clears him. Staying at Lynn Macy’s boardinghouse proves complicated, as he feels an immediate attraction to the young widow, who has already lost a spouse to the military. When it becomes clear that someone wants one or both of them dead, Jax knows he won’t be able to leave town until Lynn is safe, although she may tempt him to stay forever.
VERDICT This is the 53rd book in Lee’s “Conard County: The Next Generation” series (following Conard County Conspiracy), and fans of the series will undoubtedly feel the need to read this one as well. Others will probably want to skip it however, as its stilted dialogue, tepid romance, and three villains, who are barely more than caricatures, make it more frustrating than it is satisfying.
