Huang (Self-Love Crystals), founder of the astrological lifestyle brand Love by Luna, opens her book with the acknowledgment that self-care has become a ubiquitous buzzword. That’s refreshing and honest yet ultimately falls a bit flat when she goes on to describe how the cosmos will be the reader’s new best friend for truly taking the time to meet physical and spiritual needs. The book is oriented around pauses based on celestial rhythms and natural cycles, and it invokes organizing principles from astrology, the wheel of the year, and the planetary calendar to provide structures for building rituals into reality. While there are beautiful, deep explorations of how and why readers will benefit from this alignment, this isn’t the only book of its kind and doesn’t incorporate as much circumspection about the racial origins of self-care that have helped restore some of its power as a vehicle for larger transformation.
VERDICT A lovely book, suitable for readers looking for an accessible entry point into practices such as meditation by grounding into natural cycles and New Age concepts. It’s a bit limited, however, for readers already familiar with the basics.
