Crafting a Better World: DIY Projects and Inspiration for Craftivists

Artist, activist, and public arts creator/curator Weymar invites a wide-ranging group of activist crafters to share their insights in this collection of essays and interviews. Inspired by her anger and frustration during the Trump presidency, Weymar embroidered Trump’s tweets on reclaimed vintage textiles. This juxtaposition of beauty and anger resonated with many, who joined in Weymar’s quest to create this living document. The essays cover artists and crafters who work in a variety of mediums, including visual arts and photography, chocolate making, knitting, and garment sewing. There are also profiles and interviews with activists who have inspired her work over the years. Her book mixes craft-based activism with many perspectives, including ones noting the obstacles experienced by, for instance, Indigenous people. Some of the featured artists are well-known (Guerilla Girls, Pussy Riot, Natalie Chanin), while others are less famous and deserve a wider audience.
