Too much communication is a bad thing in Willis's long-anticipated new novel. Briddey Flanagan and her boyfriend Trent work for a company jockeying to invent the next big development in smartphone technology. When a new surgical procedure to enhance couples' intimacy by connecting their emotions makes Briddey telepathic, her relationship, her privacy, her job, and even the members of her interfering family are put at risk. Help comes from an unexpected source and with it the possibility of a real connection in a bleak and cynical world. Narrator Mia Barron captures Briddey's confusion and anxiety, as well as her growing self-awareness.
VERDICT Readers who enjoyed the mix of romantic comedy and social satire in Willis's Bellwether will be interested, as will be fans of light speculative fiction. ["A fun, romantic near-future romp from an sf master": LJ 8/16 starred review of the Del Rey: Ballantine hc.]
