Rosenfeldt, who created the TV series
The Bridge and
Marcella, launches a new series with this novel that takes place in and around Haparanda, a small Swedish town near the Finnish border. Two dead wolves are discovered with human remains in their stomachs, a situation linked to a major drug deal gone bad. To top it off, the cash and drugs from the scene are missing. Police officer Hannah Wester and her coworkers take on the case, while Hannah’s home life slowly begins to unravel. As the investigation continues, secrets among the people in town are uncovered as well. This audiobook is an interesting yet complex listen, as there are many phrases in Swedish or Finnish that are left for the listener to decipher. There is an overabundance of characters with multiple plot lines, so the information feels a little overwhelming at times. Fortunately, all of it comes together with an exciting ending that is left open for another book to follow.
VERDICT Listeners who can get past the mystery’s slow start will appreciate the action and suspense of the overall story.
