DEBUT In this epic fantasy series launch, Webb transports readers to ancient Greece, where Danae and her family are protected by Demeter, one of the Twelve Gods—provided they give adequate sacrifice. All goes wrong when Danae’s sister Alea goes missing and comes back pregnant, claiming that the father of her unborn child is Zeus. After the gods become aware of the child, Danae finds Alea found dead and simultaneously receives a vision. Her mother discovers her clinging to Alea’s body and blames her for forcing Alea to run away. Through many twists and turns, including joining Hercules, Danae finds her way to Delphi to consult the oracle about the vision and learns that she is part of a much bigger prophecy from Prometheus, who says that Danae is the daughter who will end the Twelve Gods’ reign. While fans of retellings may appreciate the action-filled story, the book occasionally makes some leaps that might require readers to look back to ensure they haven’t missed something.
VERDICT Webb debuts with a reimagining of Greek mythology that is engaging, despite its pacing issues.
