Founder of
Seed magazine and Daylesford Organic Brands, Bamford (
Nurture) pens a guide focusing on seasonal events to celebrate abundance and beauty. The main text showcases seven different meals: Snowdrop Brunch, Tulip and Cow Parsley Lunches, Wildflower Picnic, Sweet Pea Garden Party, Harvest Supper, and Christmas dinner. Each is accompanied by the author’s thoughts on the event and a single recipe for each—including celeriac, parsnip, and apple soup and a stem ginger cheesecake with poached rhubarb—along with menu suggestions (without recipes) to round out the rest of the meal. The Tulip Lunch, for example, might include a starter of purple sprouting broccoli with parmesan and a herb dressing, alongside seared rump of lamb with braised peas, radishes, and buttered Jersey Royals. The lack of full recipes moves the book out of the cookbook category and more firmly into the coffee-table entertaining guides, a feeling supported by the lavish photos that enrich the scant text.
VERDICT As a style guide to a certain way of living in the Cotswolds, it excels, providing inspiration for color pairings, furniture arrangement, and more. The tone is elegant, lovely, and gracious.
