Married couple and business partners Jaime and Henry King run King Contractors, a successful North Carolina construction and interior design company. When Jaime discovers that Henry is having an affair, they divorce. Though the divorce settlement leaves her with only a rundown fixer-upper of a house, she is determined to use her hard-won business know-how and construction skills to flip it. Unfortunately, her troubles continue, as the first wall she demolishes in the house reveals the desiccated body of a local woman. While the identification of the body and investigation of the murder is ongoing, Jaime’s project is suspended. So, with her friend Lara and newfound cat, Demo, she begins her own investigation, turning up many possible suspects but few real leads. Cindy Kay’s animated narration and excellent character voices add to the charming atmosphere of this predictable but still satisfying story.
VERDICT Cozy mystery readers should enjoy Carpenter’s debut, the first installment in her “Home Renovation Mysteries” series. Recommended for fans of mysteries with a home-improvement bent, including Kate Carlisle’s “Fixer-Upper” novels, Jennie Bentley’s “Do-It-Yourself” books, and Sarah Graves’s “Home Repair Is Homicide” series.
