This audio adaptation of popular Western writer L'Amour's short story follows a haunted Korean War veteran and his native sidekick as they battle the headhunters of Borneo to save a haughty professor and his beautiful, adventurous wife. Fans of Indiana Jones will find much to like about the tale, which was found in storage 40 years after the author's death, but the real appeal of this audiobook lies in its groundbreaking production values. This audio drama has as little in common with a traditional audiobook as a graphic novel has with a traditional work of fiction. The project took producer Beau L'Amour (Louis's son) nearly a decade to complete; it includes a 21-person cast, authentic sound effects that were collected and recorded specifically for this production, stirring original music, and all the magic of old-time radio. It is a bellwether of what audiobooks could become as the industry explores the possibilities of the increasingly popular medium.
VERDICT Highly recommended to adventure fans and audiobook enthusiasts.
