Growing up in a traditional Asian household, Woo often heard a familiar question from his mother: “Did you eat yet?” Usually, some kind of snack was waiting for Ronnie, like dumplings or his favorite, frozen pizza rolls. Featuring many of his favorite foods growing up and healthy recipes he’s learned along the way, this book has a combination of American and Asian flavors. The book is beautifully photographed and includes photos of the author and many of the recipes. A useful section includes Woo’s lists of favored hot sauces and suggested cooking oils. Readers will also appreciate how the book showcases his relationship with his family alongside treasured recipes from his mother. Some of the recipes worth trying are Easy Golden Egg Fried Rice, white wine–braised pork pagu with lasagna noodles, Mama Woo’s Pork and Shrimp Wontons, crispy hot-honey baked chicken wings, and mandarin-orange creamsicle cake with almonds.
VERDICT This first cookbook from chef and food TV personality Woo is a fun and wonderful introduction to his cooking, appropriate for all skill levels.
