When prosecutor Daphne Montgomery's son, Ford, is kidnapped, she suspects the family of the killer she has just sent to jail after a high-profile trial. As the police look for her son, she gets professional and personal support from her new lover, FBI special agent Joseph Carter. But it gradually becomes clear that the kidnapping is not a result of anything she's done at her present job. Instead, it's connected to her tragic and painful past. Marguerite Gavin does an exceptional job of reading this book. She superbly captures the nuances of a deaf character's speech and Daphne's Southern accent without sacrificing clarity.
