Jewell (
Breaking the Dark) presents a tale of deception featuring a thoroughly despicable man and the women who band together to expose his lies. Ash and her mother, Nina, were deeply shocked when Ash’s father, Paddy, died in an unusual accident. Ash becomes suspicious when Nina soon begins a new relationship with Nick, a handsome, charming restaurateur who has suddenly appeared in her life. Meanwhile, Martha, a florist in a nearby town, begins to question her husband Alistair’s increasing absences. Not surprisingly, Nick and Alistair are one and the same, but the extent of his deception is deeper and darker than Ash and Martha could have ever dreamed. As the women dig into the past of the man they think they know, they discover an entire network of women wronged by him.
VERDICT A large portion of the story is from Nick/Alistair’s perspective, and spending this much time in the mind of a devilish sociopath may be a turnoff for some readers. Jewell consistently creates compelling characters, so even with the predictable twists, this will delight her many fans and readers of domestic suspense.
