Johns (
Blackest Night Omnibus) and Frank (
Superman: Secret Origin) reckon with
Watchmen’s influence on modern superhero comics in the first part of this sequel to the best-selling graphic novel of all time. Seven years after destroying New York in order to save the universe, Ozymandias is exposed as a mass murderer, leading the world to the edge of war. Seeking redemption, he enlists an all-new Rorschach and villainous lovers Mime and Marionette in his search to track down Dr. Manhattan, who vanished at the end of the original series. The group journeys to the modern DC Universe only to discover another world on the verge of catastrophe, as widespread belief that the majority of superhumans were secretly created by the American military has resulted in an international arms race. Encounters with Batman, Superman, Lex Luthor, and the Joker follow, and while Dr. Manhattan is nowhere to be found, it quickly becomes clear he is at the center of a mystery with reality-shaking implications for all involved.
VERDICT A tense and gripping homage to Watchmen’s dissection of costumed crime fighters that also seems interested in probing the limits of its ongoing influence. A must for series followers, and a boon for DC fans seeking next chapters in its ever-expanding universe.
